Learn More About Manzanita House
Manzanita House is an organization built by and for the immigrant community. We are urgently calling upon our collective strength in response to alarming trends threatening the safety and well-being of immigrants in our community.
This moment is calling us to show up with courage and care for one another. Recent events have underscored a climate of fear as immigrants reach out to our immigration office in distress, reporting, “I am afraid to go to the check-ins.” Many express deep concerns over potential detentions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This fear is palpable and reflects a troubling reality that immigrants, who are already highly vulnerable, face daily.
On June 11th, 2025, we witnessed firsthand the distressing impact of ICE tactics outside the Broadview Dairy Building (411 W Cataldo) after detaining two individuals who had filed lawful asylum applications. ICE has been employing strategic methods that create fear surrounding the immigration process. Immigrants are increasingly paralyzed by the notion that failing to attend check-ins could deem them as “flight risks,” making them prime targets for detention. While many continue to attend their appointments without incident, an alarming number are still being detained, exacerbating anxiety within the community.
Moreover, individuals with existing removal orders face heightened risks. The consequences of missing a check-in can lead to expedited detention and removal, placing even greater strain on families and individuals seeking safety.
Manzanita House has also observed a significant disparity in detention rates between accompanied and unaccompanied individuals, further highlighting the need for urgent action and support for those navigating the immigration system alone.
Together, we can show up with courage and care, standing firmly against the intimidation tactics currently impacting our immigrant community.
